Save your first video
Download supported media and record live HLS directly in Chrome.
- Pin StreamSave in Chrome's Extensions menu, then click its icon to open the side panel.
- Play the video on its website. Choose a detected item under On this page, or paste a direct MP4, WebM, HLS, or DASH media link and choose Find video.
- Choose a quality and filename. When available, select audio tracks or subtitles.
- Choose the download button. View progress in Downloads; Show in folder opens a completed file.
Only download or record media you own or have permission to save. StreamSave does not bypass DRM or website access restrictions.
Supported media
Direct MP4 and WebM downloads retain the original file and tracks. Files requiring website request headers are copied to local temporary storage before saving; this preparation supports cancellation but not pause/resume or restart recovery. Completed HLS and supported single-period, on-demand DASH can be saved locally. Live recording supports unencrypted HLS with complete MPEG-TS or fragmented MP4 segments. Output is MP4, WebM, or MKV depending on the actual codecs. There is no re-encoding.
Download audio only preserves the original audio encoding; it does not convert to MP3. Select multiple audio tracks with Command/Ctrl-click or Shift-click, up to eight tracks. The audio list appears only when a video has more than one track. Completed HLS WebVTT subtitles can be saved separately as VTT or SRT, or embedded. Some players ignore embedded captions; use a separate subtitle file in that case.
If a stream's audio cannot be read, StreamSave stops with an explanation rather than saving a silent video. No audio track found in the details line means the stream itself carries no audio StreamSave can see. When only one quality of a stream was detected, StreamSave looks for its master playlist beside it and uses the audio listed there. If the page serves the audio as a separate HLS stream, pick it under Audio from another stream; StreamSave only accepts an audio-only stream of the same length as the video.
Live recording and recovery
Start recording captures from the available live window when the queued job begins. Stop & save saves committed segments as a partial recording. Cancel & discard deletes that job's captured media. Closing the panel is safe; keep Chrome running and your device awake.
After a failed or interrupted HLS or fully segmented DASH capture, choose Save recovered media to assemble committed segments, or Discard recovery to delete them. Recovery can survive a browser restart but cannot restore uncaptured media, missing tracks, or evicted storage. It does not resume a live broadcast. Direct files, direct audio extraction, standalone subtitles, and single-file/mixed-layout DASH do not have segment recovery.
If no videos appear
- Play the video and reopen the panel on its tab.
- Check website access in Chrome's extension settings. Automatic detection needs the extension's broad website access; restricting it can disable detection. A pasted media link can request access to its media domain.
- Use a media link, rather than a normal webpage address. Media may be hosted on a different domain from the page.
- Chrome internal pages and some protected website pages cannot be inspected.
If a download fails
- For HTTP 403 after selecting a detected video, reload StreamSave in Chrome, reload the website, and play the video again before selecting it. StreamSave reuses observed website request headers for the same media server; old detections and pasted links may lack this context.
- For an expired link or authentication error, reopen the source website, sign in normally, and find a fresh media link.
- For insufficient storage, save or discard existing recovery entries and free disk space. Capture, assembly, and the final file can briefly use roughly three times the media size.
- Lower simultaneous downloads in Settings if the website throttles requests or the device is under load.
- Try a player that supports the output codec if a saved file does not play on your device.
Known limits
Live DASH, encrypted/DRM media, HLS byte ranges and timeline discontinuities, partial low-latency segments, multi-period DASH, DASH subtitles, and live subtitles are unsupported. Separate live audio needs matching program timestamps. Recordings are limited to 20,000 segments across selected tracks. Individual media responses are capped at 32 MiB. These limits can prevent otherwise playable website videos from downloading.
Privacy and cleanup
No account or desktop helper is required. Media is processed locally. Use Clear finished to clear ordinary extension history; save or discard recoverable entries separately. Saved files and Chrome's own download history remain. Read the privacy policy for data handling and retention.
